Start every day with an attitude of gratitude.

Gratitude is defined as the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. In a spiritual sense, gratitude is a mighty force. It can change the whole landscape of our lives. It can take a situation that seems dead or hopeless and infuse it into life. Mostly, practicing giving thanks in all things changes us inside and out. It is a worthy habit to pursue. So, choose gratitude today.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances. I Thessalonians 5:16 - 18

Time after time in the Word of God we are called to give thanks. Not only is God more than worthy of our grateful hearts, but the very act of thanksgiving also reminds us of who we are and who he is. Every breath we take comes from him. Every good thought we have is a gift from him. When we lie down at night and sleep in peace, it is because of him. When we rise up and we are still with him, it is a gift. So, choose gratitude today.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. -Psalm 9:1

Choosing gratitude is a choice that requires constantly renewing your mind with the truth of God’s Word, setting your heart to savor God and His gifts, and disciplining the words that you speak. Even in the most turbulent waters, choosing gratitude rescues you from your runaway emotions.

Start a gratitude journal to provide invaluable reminders of your own human resilience and God’s absolute faithfulness in your life. The records of gratitude you keep today will be a consolation to someone else after you’ve gone on to heaven. Please keep in mind that writing in a journal enriches creativity, deepens insight, and helps you see in writing your own life’s story. And that story is God’s gift to you.

Journal Prompts:

• What are you grateful for?
• Find a gratitude quote and reflect on it. What does the quote mean to you?
• What are my values?
• What do I believe in?
• What is my proudest accomplishment?
• What is my biggest failure?
